And here's the truth, based on what I’ve seen teaching in the local school system for more than 12 years, there is a system that certain students have used ,cohort after cohort, intakes after intakes, to do much better than the rest.
In 2010, while I was being assigned to the MOE HQ , I came across certain learning principles that were so surprisingly simple, yet not utilised by at least 95% of students when tackling their maths exams, or preparing for them.
When I was assigned back to school as an HOD after, I noticed this pattern again: There was a sharp contrast in the way the top students tackled problem sums compared to their peers.
This group of students adopted a systematic approach from understanding the question, organising the information and finally to work out the solution. This is the reason why they are always in the top 5% during every exam.
I spent nights trying to figure out which teaching method could make maths learning more effective and more accelerated than the previous models.
In my quest to improve the standards of learning among the weaker students, I began to "cross-breed" the "Teaching Models" that I've learnt during my MOE-HQ attachment with the "Techniques" employed by this group of students in the Top 5%.
