Let's "Gear Up" for CA1!

Dear parents,
Term 1 has started. The learning pace in school is slowly picking up. Many schools would have informed parents that the end-of-term assessment or CA1 will be conducted at the end of February. Are you currently making sure that your child is ready for CA1?
Prelims and CA2 is less than a month away and you realised that your child still have issues with problem sums, especially those questions in Paper 2.
A review of the last year's CA1 indicated that many students still have a lot of issues translating keywords into workable models to help them solve the problem sums. Some problematic areas include the Before-After Concept in Whole Numbers and Fractions, and Number Patterns.
Listed below are 3 types of Non-Routine problem sums.
Before-After Concept – Whole Numbers
Sample Question
In a game, Frank scored 197 points while Mike scored 240 points more than Ken at first.
After Mike lost 332 points to Frank, Ken had 3 times as many points as Mike.
How many points did the three boys score altogether?
Before-After Concept – Fractions
Sample Question
Alan, Ben and Chloe shared some stamps together.
Alan gave away 2/5 of his stamps, Ben gave away 1/4 of his stamps and Chloe gave away 1/3 of her stamps.
In the end, they have a total of 216 stamps left.
Given that the three of them have an equal number of stamps left, what was the total number of stamps they had at first?
Number Patterns
Sample Question
A sequence of shaded and unshaded squares is shown in the figures below.

a) Find the number of shaded squares in Figure 30.
b) What is the total number of shaded and unshaded squares in Figure 10?
Objective
The aim of this workshop is to share with students and parents the following:
- How to identify these problem sums?
- How to select the right strategies?
- How to extend these strategies to solve problem sums involving fraction and whole numbers?
With CA2 just 1 month away, you want to ensure that all those issues that your child had with problem sums are addressed adequately.
This is the right time to address your child's learning needs and boost their confidence before the upcoming exams.
Preview to PSLE Preparation Programme
The PSLE Math Exam is on 28 September 2018. With just 8 months to go before PSLE, parents need to ensure that their children are getting in the best performance state in order to ACE the major exams.
Here are 3 things that all parents with P6 children should know.
1) Exam Questions are very different from Textbook questions. Mastering the content in the textbook alone is simply not enough, especially when it comes to solving problem sums. While textbooks are structured based on topics, the problem sums are based on heuristics. There are 11 heuristics to be tested at PSLE, (p32, MOE website ). Each heuristics comes with a set of thinking skills. If your child is just relying on the textbook to prepare for exams and PSLE, it may not be adequate.
2) Visualisation and Communications are crucial elements in presenting your solution during exams. Use of appropriate symbols and models are important to communicate your child's idea clearly to the teacher marking your child's exam paper. Most students lose valuable marks because they have all the workings "in their head", but not written clearly on the exam paper.
3) Using a structured approach, such as the Polya's model, to make sense of the problem sum will greatly increase the students' accuracy. It will guide the students in identifying the keywords and select the appropriate strategies to solve the problem. However, some students tend to focus on the wrong keywords, due to lack of guidance, and are unable to solve the problem sums effectively.
We will be giving a preview of our highly popular PSLE Preparation Programme that has help P6 students improve 10-15 marks within a short period of 3 months.
This programme is designed to equip students with the essential skills such as heuristics, visualisation, communication and thinking approach needed to excel in PSLE. This programme is suitable for students who needed that extra PUSH to help them reach their fullest potential.
Preview to P5 Math Mastery Programme
Based on our expereince coaching hundreds of students, the crucial year to prepare for PSLE in during P5. If students don't build a strong foundation in P5, it would be so much harder for them to bridge the learning gap in P6.
Once students developed a strong foundation in P5, they will be able to spend more time in their revision during P6. In case you are not aware, P6 students have only 9 months to prepare for PSLE.
We will be giving a preview of our P5 Math Mastery Programme. This programme is the foundation of our students' success. In this programme, we equipped our students with the essential problem sums strategies and thinking skills that has enabled them to bridge the performance gap and make 1-2 grade jump within 60 days.
This programme is designed for students who are facing challenges in tackling problem sums and looking for a breakthrough in their performance.
Using our proven strategies, we are able to help hundreds of students to :
- Improve their grades
- Increase their motivation
- Boost their self confidence
Preview to P4 Math Mastery Programme
The math curriculum in P4 places a strong emphasis on problem solving skills and higher order thinking. The questions are much more demanding as compared to P3.
Many students tend to struggle in Section C of the exam paper because this is the section consist of mainly problem sums. They are required to visualise the question and organise their information into a diagram or model before they are able to solve it. Without the right training, many students face a lot of difficulties in understanding the questions.
This is also the crucial year for P4 students as they are introduce to Subject-based Banding. Based on their performance this year, the school will recommend a subject-combination that is suitable for them.
If P4 students don't build a strong foundation in math, they would not be able to select the subject combination of their choice.
